Performance Dates:<\/strong> Friday 4th April \u2013 Saturday 5th April 2025 (3 performances)<\/p>

Rehearsals:<\/strong> Thursdays (7.00 – 9.30pm) from January 2025 at The Badger, Street Houses, Ponteland Road, Ponteland, NE20 9BT and an additional evening\/weekend afternoon to be added for larger roles (night\/weekend afternoon TBC).\u00a0 3 additional Sundays in Ponteland Memorial Hall (3.00 – 6.00pm) in February\/March for all cast.<\/p>

Read Through:<\/strong> Thursday 28th November 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start at The Badger.\u00a0 An opportunity to meet the production team and read through the play and get to know the characters.<\/p>

Synopsis<\/strong><\/h3>

Hilarious comedy of the worst singer in the world.\u00a0 In 1940s New York, the performer who everyone\u00a0wanted to see live was Florence Foster Jenkins, an enthusiastic soprano whose pitch was far from perfect.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Known as \u201cthe first lady of the sliding scale,\u201d she warbled and screeched her way through the evening to\u00a0<\/span>an audience who mostly fell about with laughter.\u00a0 But this delusional and joyously happy woman paid little\u00a0<\/span>attention to her critics.\u00a0 Instead, she was surrounded by a circle of devoted friends who were almost as\u00a0<\/span>eccentric as she was.<\/span><\/p>

Based upon a true story, the play spins from Florence’s charity recitals and extravagant balls, through to\u00a0<\/span>her bizarre recording sessions and an ultimate triumph at Carnegie Hall in this hilarious and heartwarming\u00a0<\/span>comedy.<\/span><\/p>

Characters (description and ages)<\/strong><\/h3>

Florence Foster Jenkins; Female; Acting Age 50+ ; Lines 547 (American accent)
<\/b><\/span>Eccentric American lady and amateur soprano.\u00a0 Florence Foster Jenkins is a singer.\u00a0 A bad singer.\u00a0 One of the\u00a0<\/span>worst ever (she just doesn\u2019t realise it) but also kind, na\u00efve and likeable.\u00a0 Requires an actress prepared to\u00a0<\/span>sing loudly and confidently \u2013 but not necessarily a good singer.\u00a0 It requires a keen sense of comedy.<\/span><\/p>

Cosme McMoon: Male; Acting Age 20+; Lines 320 (American accent)
<\/b>Cosme McMoon is quite a shy character with a dry sense of humour who is shocked by Florence’s inability\u00a0<\/span>to sing.\u00a0 He accompanies her on her recitals playing piano \u2013 eventually coming to appreciate her warmth\u00a0<\/span>and enthusiasm \u2013 whilst continually avoiding any praise of her abilities! This part requires great comedic\u00a0<\/span>timing \u2013 many of the laughs depend on his perfectly timed reactions to Florence.\u00a0 No piano playing\u00a0<\/span>experience required.<\/span><\/p>

St Claire: Male; Acting Age 45+; Lines: 238 (English accent)
<\/b>St Clair is Florence Foster Jenkins manager and boyfriend.\u00a0 He is an out of work English actor and\u00a0<\/span>accompanies Florence on all her recitals.\u00a0 A flirtatious and likeable character with a typical upper-class wit \u2013\u00a0<\/span>Hugh Grant was well cast in this role.\u00a0 Again, a strong sense of comedy timing is required for this part.<\/span><\/p>

Dorothy: Female; Acting Age 40+; Lines: 205 (American accent)
<\/b>Dorothy is Florence\u2019s neighbour and best friend who adores her, defends her to the hilt and genuinely\u00a0<\/span>seems to like her singing.\u00a0 She has a no-nonsense side to her character as well as enjoying a mild flirtation\u00a0<\/span>with St Clair.<\/span><\/p>

Maria: Female; Acting Age 16+; Lines: 33 (Spanish)
<\/b>Florence’s housemaid who is a feisty character and regularly gets frustrated at the lack of communication\u00a0<\/span>between Florence and herself.\u00a0 Strong gestures and facial expressions are required.\u00a0 This part is Spanish\u00a0<\/span>speaking throughout the whole play.<\/span><\/p>

Mrs Verrinder-Gedge: Female; Age 30+; Lines: 60 (American accent)
<\/b>An indignant, angry music lover who tries to petition for Florence to get banned for her terrible singing in\u00a0<\/span>the name of music and decency!\u00a0 This character only appears, albeit rather forcefully, in 1 scene and so\u00a0<\/span>would not be required for a significant chunk of rehearsals.<\/span><\/p>
